Science New Zealand mission
To foster appreciation of the value of science and technology in creating economic, environmental and social wealth for New Zealand; and to provide policy, organisational, relationship and advocacy support for Crown Research Institutes.
To deliver this mission requires Science New Zealand to support Crown Research Institutes in actively influencing New Zealand's research, science and technology environment – particularly the wider public sphere.
Actions include:
- Publicly celebrating science successes and the role Crown Research Institutes have in identifying, raising and contributing to critical national and global challenges and solutions;
- Celebrating, promoting and encouraging the linkages with industry and to the community at large;
- Promoting knowledge about and pride in the national and global successes and recognition of Crown Research Institutes;
- Increasing recognition for and pride in our scientists, their work and the difference they make for New Zealand;
- Promoting and encouraging science as a career;
- Supporting educational institutions and students so as to encourage more youngsters into science;
- Promoting a culture that values the difference science can make for government, industry and society.
- Supporting its members as they implement the principles of operation for Crown Research Institutes set out in the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992:
- Pursue research for the benefit of New Zealand
- Pursue excellence in all activities
- Comply with all ethical standards
- Promote and facilitate research and technology development
- Be a good employer
- Be socially responsible
- Achieve an adequate rate of return on shareholder's funds.
